Customer Personas & Awareness Map
Hyde & Hare
8 September 2026

Who buys a Hyde & Hare sheepskin, who they buy it for, what they are trying to solve, and how far along they are when an ad reaches them. Built from 1,041 reviews, 8,986 orders, a full 19,500-order history, 3,500 Meta purchases across six seasonal windows, a year of Google search data and the January 2026 customer survey. Every number on this page is computed from those files. Internal working document; the persona doc itself is clients/hyde-and-hare/personas.md (draft).

01 · How the personas were built

Six sources, six findings, four people

Nothing here is a guess. Each persona is a pattern that showed up independently in at least two sources, then was written in the customers' own words from the reviews. Where only one source supports a claim, the page says so.

02 · The buyer barely changes by season

Same brand, the same buyer, four different jobs

Meta purchases by age and gender, four windows. The striking thing is how little the buyer moves: women are 91% to 91% of purchases in every season, and 55 to 64 is the largest band every time. Men never exceed a tenth, even at Christmas. What actually changes is age at the edges: 65 and over rises to 23% in the new year, and the under-45s tick up at Christmas. This is why the personas differ by JOB, not by demographic.

03 · She buys for her own home

Three sources say self-purchase. The order calendar says gifting. Both are true.

Shopify only sees a gift when the shipping surname differs from the billing surname, and here that line is flat at 5.1% all year, including Q4. The second chart is flat at zero for a simpler reason: there is no gift note, gift message, gift card or gift wrap at checkout, so not one of the 8,986 orders could carry one. Google agrees, with zero conversions from 256 gift search terms. The reviews agree, with three quarters naming no recipient. And yet 38.1% of every customer ever acquired arrived in October, November or December. The gift buyer is real. She is invisible because nothing in the shop asks her who it is for.

04 · The buyer barely changes. The product does.

What people buy, month by month

Every order classified by the category of its lead product. The mix is remarkably stable, which is the point: this is not an occasion business. Two months break the pattern. December triples the warmth and bedroom share, which is the Q4 gift signal showing up as bed socks and hot water bottles. March and April 2026 spike seat pads, and that one is NOT a season: a whole new seat pad range launched that month. The share of orders CONTAINING a seat pad went from 6.3% in February to 44.2% in April and has held near 20% ever since. Checked against the prior year on purpose, because April 2025 was the year's lowest seat pad month at 7.6%. Each order here is tagged by its highest-value line item, so a brush bought to clean a rug does not outrank the rug.

Where each persona is standing when the ad arrives

Eugene Schwartz's ladder, written in Hyde & Hare terms. A persona's stage decides the hook, the objection to answer and the proof to show. It never decides campaign structure: delivery stays broad and is never split by stage or persona.

P1
The core self-purchaser, and the voice in the reviews

The Forever-Home Curator

Woman, 45 to 64, curating a Modern Country forever home. Buys investment pieces with comfort as the organising principle, and enters at the £75 to £79 sheepskin.

In the data

  • She is the voice of the corpus: 76% of 1,041 reviews name no recipient at all, and only 3 mention a mother
  • Quality and craftsmanship is the loudest theme at 40% of reviews, then softness and texture at 24%
  • She names the room: 16% of reviews say living room, bedroom, sofa, bench or hallway. The survey confirms living room and bedroom are the loved rooms
  • She searches for the object, never the occasion: "sheepskin rug", "sheepskin throw", "sheepskin throw for chair", "sheepskin chair cover" are the top non-brand Google terms

She knows a natural-fibre piece is the answer and is deciding which maker to trust. What holds her is not the idea; it is that she cannot feel the pile or judge the colour through a screen.

Use case, in the customer's words

Problem
The room is cold and unfinished, and high-street textiles pill and flatten within a season.
Desire
Comfort as a daily routine, and "distinct pieces meant to last forever". The site's own words are "sumptuously soft" and "sink into".
Failed solution
A named rival that let her down: "I was replacing another similar rug just ordered from a well known retailer, which never made it". Synthetic high-street textiles are a hypothesis, and an untested creative lane.
Reason to believe
Real long-wool New Zealand sheepskin, handpicked, finished in England. 4.94 across 1,041 reviews, and 100% likelihood to recommend in the survey.
Micro moment
Bare feet on a cold floor with the first coffee. The evening reading chair.
Trigger moment
Autumn nesting, a colourway she loves, or styling content that shows the room actually finished.
Objections
The tactile gap is the number one stated hesitation: "I can't feel the texture", plus exact colour matching. Then price, which makes her wait for the right moment or a sale.
“Beautiful and high quality sheepskin rug. Bought to add a touch of luxury to my new sofa. I would definitely buy from this company again and recommend to friends and family.”
Deborah H. · Sheepskin Rug - Cream
“The rug came exactly as on the picture, maybe even better. Excellent quality and matching my wardrobe perfectly. Strongly recommend! Price is also very modest.”
ELENA R. · Cowhide Rug - Grey
“Always apprehensive when it's an online purchase, and you can't see it "in real life" but honestly they are actually better than I expected.”

The Considered Gift-Giver

The same woman as Persona 1, buying for her mother, sister, host or a new home. Not a different demographic: men are only a tenth of Christmas purchases, so there is no male gifting lane to chase here.

In the data

  • 38.1% of every new customer Hyde & Hare has ever acquired arrived in October, November or December. November alone is 15.9% and December 14.3%
  • December is the only month whose product mix changes shape: warmth and bedroom goes from 2 to 5% of orders to 14%. The Q4 product is bed socks, hot water bottles and the Gift Box, not the entry rug
  • Gift Box with Women's Cashmere Bed Socks, in four separate colourways, is the top gift-shaped co-purchase in the whole dataset
  • And yet: Google's gift search bucket converted ZERO times in 12 months from 256 terms, the gift proxy is flat at 5.1% all year, and the ad account has never run a gifting creative

  • Something unmistakably premium that gets used every day, not decoration
  • The unboxing: packaging is praised unprompted in a quarter of all reviews

  • Being told what to choose for someone else, which is the same problem as choosing a colour blind

She has a person to buy for and no idea what to buy. She is problem-aware about the gift and often completely unaware of the category. She is not comparing sheepskin makers; she is deciding whether this is a good enough present.

Use case, in the customer's words

Problem
She needs a gift for someone who has everything, and the safe options feel thoughtless. Practically: she cannot tell Hyde & Hare that it is a gift, because the store never asks.
Desire
To give something the recipient uses every day and mentions afterwards. Customers already perceive the brand as luxury and gift-worthy.
Failed solution
Candles, vouchers and the other safe-but-forgettable defaults. This is a hypothesis; the Q4 demand itself is measured.
Reason to believe
Packaging praised unprompted: "the amazing way it was packed, with tissue paper and ribbon". The Gift Box exists and sells. The bed socks are the one hero product whose own copy says "the perfect gift".
Micro moment
The recipient opening it. Packaging is part of the product here, and the reviews say so without being asked.
Trigger moment
The November and December new-customer peak. The £200 complimentary-rug threshold as a complete-the-gift nudge.
Objections
Will it arrive in time, and can it be returned. Both are unanswered on the site: there is no published Christmas cutoff and no extended Christmas returns window. Then choosing a colour for someone else.
“A pair of beautiful pink cashmere socks was sent to me as a gift from my daughter. We live on a farm near Cape Town, South Africa where winters can get cold and miserable, so these socks are a real treat.”
Belinda K. · Women's Cashmere Bed Socks - Soft Pink
“I bought this as a housewarming gift, the fleece colour and markings chosen to suit the recipient, not something you could do everywhere. It was well received and I've since bought my third.”
Paula G. · Rarebreed British Sheepskin Rug
“The packaging was beautiful in itself and made opening this gift a real treat. I cannot wait to show it off!”
Jaime · The Winslow Purse

The Statement-Piece Investor

Same demographic, shopping for one anchor piece: a giant beanbag at £749, a pouffe, a large or double rug, a cowhide. Google recruits her almost by default while roughly 80% of Meta spend sits on the entry sheepskin.

In the data

  • Beanbags and pouffes are 21.5% of line revenue from only 583 orders, second in the business to the entire sheepskin rug category at 45.6%
  • Google recruits her and Meta does not: £300+ first baskets are 14.4% of Google orders against 5.5% of Meta
  • Meta can recruit her when it tries: the beanbag-ad cohort came back at LTV12 £245, Google-level, though n=26 is directional
  • Being seen is measurable: 5% of reviews are about compliments, being admired, or guests noticing the piece

Interests and what matters to them

  • One piece that anchors the room, and gets remarked on
  • Provenance at the price: made in England by hand, from two premium Italian cowhides, small batches only

She has decided she wants one serious piece and is choosing between makers at a price where the choice has to be justified. At £749 the value has to be argued, and it currently is not.

Use case, in the customer's words

Problem
The room needs one piece that pulls it together, and scattered high-street buys do not do it. Or the previous statement piece has died: "needed to replace an old leather one which had seen better days".
Desire
A distinct forever piece that gets noticed. "The most fought-over seat in the home" is the brand's own line for it.
Failed solution
Comparing against The White Company and others. Hyde & Hare holds a real five-star review saying "A rival to The White Company" that has never carried an ad.
Reason to believe
"Made in England by hand and we only receive small batches, from two premium Italian cowhides, nearly one meter in diameter." And the owners' own words: "admired by everyone that sees it".
Micro moment
Guests noticing it. The dog claiming it. Sinking into it at the end of the day.
Trigger moment
A renovation, a new forever home, or the snug that has just been finished.
Objections
£749 has to be argued, not discounted. Texture and colour unseen matter more at this price. And whether it can survive a family.
“We purchased this for the renovation of our snug and it's totally beautiful. Words can't describe how much we love sitting in it, it's so beautifully made and will be a favourite for many years to come. Just need a matching Vole one now!”
Louise A. · Giant Sheepskin Beanbag - Ivory
“I am absolutely delighted with my cowhide beanbag, it's beautiful and admired by everyone that sees it, excellent quality and very comfortable, next on the list is cushions to match.”
Sarah C. · Giant Cowhide Beanbag
“It looks great, it's really soft, comfy and warm while being firm enough to sit on without deforming, it feels like it will last a long time.”

Use case, in the customer's words

Problem
One looks lonely. And against that, the stated number one barrier to buying again: "I don't need anything right now".
Desire
The finished room, and the set completed. The collecting habit is measured in the order paths, not assumed.
Failed solution
Waiting for a sale that may not come. And the rewards scheme, which she says is too "stretching" to reach, so it never lifts the basket.
Reason to believe
She already owns the proof and says so: "I've since bought my third, which says all that you need to know".
Micro moment
Seeing the single piece daily, and the gap next to it. The dog that claimed the first one.
Trigger moment
A new range drop, the £200 complimentary-rug threshold, and above all the first 30 days after her first order.
Objections
Does not need it right now. Answer with completion and occasion, never urgency furniture, which Piers strips out anyway. Then matching a colour to what she already owns.
“This is the third Hyde & Hare cowhide cushion I have purchased. The products are high-quality hides and are finished out nicely on the backside. Very happy with these products for my couch. Will order again!”
Susan P. · Cowhide Cushion - Medium
“I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of the Hyde and Hare products, I'm confident each one is as beautiful as the next.”
Cyndie B. · Sheepskin Pouffe - Cream
“Just received my sheepskin cushions and rug. The quality is fabulous I couldn't be more pleased. They certainly transform our living room. I will definitely be ordering from here again.”

Who to build content for, and when

Hyde & Hare has three peaks, not one, and the content for each has to be built the month before it opens. Each row shows who is buying in that window and what to build during it for the next. The Collector runs all year as the evergreen lane and is not tied to a season. This is message planning only: campaigns stay broad and are never split by persona or stage.

Sept 2026Autumn nesting starts. 7.2% of all new customers land in September; the month is a build month, not a peak.

Meta autumn buyer is 88% women, 55-64 the largest band. Seat pad attach is holding at 19 to 20% six months after the March range drop. Sheepskin and shearling take 81 to 85% of line revenue.

The whole Q4 gifting layer: C06 gift creative, plus the three things it needs on site first (a stated Christmas cutoff date, an extended Christmas returns window, and a price-banded gift route). Also C03 priced statics and the C08 decision-help asset, because gift buyers cannot choose a colour for someone else.

October 2025 revenue was £140,641 against November's £302,934. December warmth and bedroom share triples to 14.1% of orders, so the Q4 product is bed socks, hot water bottles and the Gift Box, not the entry rug.

December 2025 closed at £184,816 against November's £302,934. The gift proxy does not move, so the post-cutoff buyer is buying for herself.

65+ is 23.7% of Meta purchases in the Jan to Feb window against 16.5% across the year. Cushion share of orders peaks at 7.4% in January. HYGGE is the most-used code of the year at 925 orders.

The spring range drop creative. March 2026 is the proof: a new seat pad range took attach from 6.3% in February to 44.2% in April and it has held at 19 to 23% ever since. Whatever drops in spring 2027 needs its creative finished in February.

February 2026 took £109,130 on 645 orders. Seat pad attach bottomed at 6.3% here before the March range landed. Mother's Day is NOT an evidenced H&H occasion: 3 of 1,041 reviews mention a mother and gift search converts zero times.

August 2026 took £207,250 on 1,205 orders against July's £89,866. The SUMMER code ran on 862 orders at an average £31 discount. This peak is a sale, so it recruits price-led buyers who need the quality argument afterwards.
